Hubba Hubba Smokehouse is Hubba Hubba Good

While we were out looking at Hendersonville orchards and walking the streets of Downtown Hendersonville last weekend, we got a little hungry. And while we always enjoy some tasty Moe’s Original BBQ there on Main Street in Hendo, the future Mrs. was looking for something we hadn’t tried before. After a quick search on her fancy internet-enabled device, she came up with Hubba Hubba Smokehouse.

It. Didn’t. Disappoint.

Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, Flat Rock, North CarolinaHubba Hubba Smokehouse is a quick 10-minute drive from downtown Hendersonville straight down Greenville Highway (Hwy 225) to Flat Rock. The Village of Flat Rock is gorgeous and the drive is scenic, but that’s another story for another time. There on the left side of the road we found the sign for this amazing little place that is full of character and charm.

We had originally ordered take-out by phone so we got in line to pay and pick it up. And as we waited, I saw what a wonderful and unique place it really was, so I started snapping some photos with my handy-dandy camera-enabled device. A young man on the inside of the restaurant took notice (“make sure you tag us!”) and we started a conversation and talked for a good 10 minutes. And we ended up eating outside in their dining area to soak it all in.

Hubba Hubba Smokehouse has been there for 13 years and sits down from the road behind Dogwood gift shop, Honey and Salt, a breakfast and brunch establishment, and Campfire Grill (owned by the same folks as Hubba Hubba Smokehouse) as part of Little Rainbow Row, a colorfully-painted group of shops and restaurants that form the downtown area of Flat Rock and an homage to Charleston, South Carolina’s Rainbow Row, which consists of colorfully-painted homes.

Hubba Hubba Smokehouse’s website describes their location as feeling “like you’re in a friend’s backyard”. I could not have described it better myself. There is a large outdoor covered dining area with a considerable number of wrought iron tables and chairs, beautiful flowers and a large outdoor fireplace to complete the ambiance. Also, there are a couple of free-range chickens roaming around. They are James Brown and Grace. It’s not as weird as it sounds. Trust me.

Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, Flat Rock, North CarolinaI’m so caught up in describing the restaurant that I almost completely forgot to talk about the food. Let’s talk about the brisket. This isn’t just some average ordinary run-of-the-mill brisket. This is perfectly seasoned meat that has the right amount of juiciness and has been slow-cooked over native hardwoods for hours. You know how you hear about a restaurant offering tender meat? You haven’t seen tender meat until you’ve had the brisket at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse. The future Mrs. said it was falling apart just trying to get it on the fork.

They offer more than brisket though. Grab a pulled pork plate or a half-rack of ribs. They offer sliders, a pork BBQ sandwich or a sliced brisket sandwich. Can’t decide? They offer what they call the Indecision Plate on their menu, which gives you a little bit of pork and a little bit of brisket plus a couple of sides and your choice of bread.

They are open Thursdays from 11-3, Friday and Saturday 11-7, Sunday 11-3 and Monday 11-3. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday each week.
